Webinar | Inclusion of MSA and MSA.km² as indicators for the Post-2020 GBF

📆 On Tuesday, September 27, 2022, CDC Biodiversité organises a consultation webinar on the position paper for the inclusion of MSA and MSA.km² as headline indicators for the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

  • 📢 About this event

In support of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, a monitoring framework is being developed and in this context, a position paper for the inclusion of Mean Species Abundance (MSA) as a headline indicator for Goal A and Target 15 of the Post-2020 GBF, as well as MSA.km² for Target 15 has been drafted. So far, the MSA was already identified as a complementary indicator for Goal A in the monitoring framework, but it is believed it would be even more valuable as a headline indicator.

The MSA is the metric behind a number of biodiversity footprint measurement tools: it allows to characterize the intactness of ecosystems with a range from 0% to 100%, where 100% represents an undisturbed pristine ecosystem. It is then spatialized over an impacted surface to obtain results in MSA.km².

After a first draft released in June 2022, the position paper has been updated and a second version is now available and under public consultation until September 27. The webinar will thus close the consultation phase and a final version will be developed based on the results, for submission to the Secretariat of the CBD ahead of COP15.
